Commuter Assistance Helps Reduce Fuel Costs and Prevent Pollution

Gas prices continue to rise across the U.S., at an average of 2.5 cents per gallon every week. Americans are now paying 31 cents more per gallon than they were in December 2003. Motivated by rising fuel costs, as well as concerns of traffic congestion and air pollution, many Americans are looking for ways to reduce their driving time.

This can be a difficult task, especially in the many cities and towns across America that are oriented around automobile transportation. Today, there are 200 million cars on the road and many of them contain only one person—the driver. While public transit is an ideal alternative, it is often inconvenient for citizens of smaller communities.

The Sarasota / Manatee Commuter Assistance Program is a new, convenient solution to one-car commuting. This program provides a free ride-matching service arranging carpools and vanpools for commuters to travel directly from home to work. The service is available for commuters whose trips either begin or end in Sarasota or Manatee counties. Participants save on fuel and vehicle maintenance costs while avoiding stressful driving time and helping reduce pollution.

Employers are encouraged to set up commuter assistance programs for their employees as an incentive to help cut travel costs. Businesses that utilize a vanpool will save money by reducing the space needs for employee parking. Startup subsidies, educational programs and tax incentives are available to assist new participants in the rideshare program.

The Sarasota / Manatee Commuter Assistance Program is a pro-active approach to developing a more sustainable community by stimulating the economy, relieving traffic congestion, eliminating polluting emissions, easing stress and preventing health issues. The program is funded by the Federal Department of Transportation, Sarasota County and Manatee County.

Whether you’re a commuter looking for an easier and more affordable way to get to work or an employer interested in helping to ease your employees’ commute and save money doing so, you can contact Sarasota / Manatee  Commuter Assistance for more information at: 1-886-585-RIDE (1-866-585-7433).
