2. Ride a bike The bicycle is the most efficient transportation choice available. In Florida, we’re blessed with flat roads and warm year-round weather—a perfect combination. Incorporate a bicycle commute into your weekly schedule to avoid traffic and get a healthy dose of exercise. Network with local biking groups to learn about bike safety and community rides. 3. Take the bus once a week As fuel costs rise, the price of a bus ride becomes an even better bargain. Check out a Sarasota County Area Transit map of bus routes to see how you can incorporate a bus trip into your weekly routine. You may find that riding the bus to work takes only five minutes longer than driving a car, while it cuts your fuel costs in half. Sarasota County transit buses offer bike racks, so you can even combine your bus ride with a bike commute. Choosing mass transit helps reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions that produce global warming. Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) Maps: Found in all Sarasota County Public Libraries
4. Walk instead of driving For short trips, walking is just as efficient as driving, and eliminates the need for parking. The health benefits of walking include fresh air, sunshine and moderate exercise. Think of your walk as part of your workout schedule, rather than an extra time constraint. Walking is also an excellent way to meet neighbors and learn about your community.
5. Choose a convenient place to live Where you live determines your transportation choices. When you choose your home, think about your daily needs. Is there a grocery store, drug store or restaurant within walking distance? How far are you from your workplace, or your child’s school? Living in a central, urban area will give you many more transportation options, reducing your commute and allowing you to spend more time at home and with your family.
6. Share rides If you find yourself frustrated with traffic and high fuel prices, chances are that your neighbors and coworkers feel the same way. Post signs around your neighborhood, in your workplace or at your child’s school to find fellow commuters to set up a carpool.
7. Support sustainable development Sustainable transportation begins with conscientious community planning. Support initiatives in your town or city to improve public transportation and promote dense development where citizens can live, work and go to school in the same vicinity. Help raise the issues of bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly routes when new road construction takes place. Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center
