Green Food Service and Products

Through a commitment to incorporating sustainability throughout county government operations, Sustainable Sarasota is researching options for "greening" the food service in county buildings.

Benefits of green food service are:
   • Reduced waste stream
   • Reduced energy usage
   • Support of local business
   • Increased recycling rate
   • Support of local and sustainable
     agriculture

Recommendations for the green food service initiative include
 
  • Develop an "environmental business policy" for the food service program.
  • Purchase energy efficient appliances as needed and maintain energy-saving and water-saving policies.
  • Use low-waste, recycled and biodegradable food service supplies.
  • Develop composting and extensive recycling programs for food supplies.
  • Purchase foods from local, organic and sustainable farms.
