North Port High School Students Test Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology
Hydrogen fuel cells are an emerging technology that many believe represent the future of our global energy economy. North Port High School students became key players in determining that future on April 8, when a hydrogen fuel cell was installed on school grounds.

Sea Turtle Nesting Season Begins
Sea turtle nesting and hatching season begins May 1 and lasts until October 31. Sarasota County has the highest density of sea turtle nests on the Gulf Coast of Florida and is home to several threatened and endangered sea turtle species.

Commuter Assistance Program Cuts Fuel Costs and Prevents Pollution
The Sarasota / Manatee Commuter Assistance Program is a new, convenient solution to one-car commuting. The program provides a free ride-matching service arranging carpools and vanpools for commuters to travel directly from home to work. The service is available for commuters whose trips either begin or end in Sarasota or Manatee counties. Participants save on fuel and vehicle maintenance costs while avoiding stressful driving time and helping reduce pollution.

Sustainability is a challenging concept, but it’s something that Mother Nature mastered eons ago. Everyday, complex ecosystems do their work, requiring no energy and no input other than the rays of the sun. As we seek sustainable solutions for our own society, we need look no further than outside our windows to find an ideal and accessible model.  

Food Waste Composting Project Reduces Waste and Prevents Pollution
In 2003, Sarasota County collaborated with Resource Management Group to take composting a step further and research the possibilities for recycling food waste at the municipal level.
