Sea Turtle Nesting Season Begins
May 1, 2004

Sea turtle nesting and hatching season begins May 1 and lasts until October 31. Sarasota County has the highest density of sea turtle nests on the Gulf Coast of Florida and is home to several threatened and endangered sea turtle species.

“This honor comes with responsibility” according to Kenya Leonard, manager of the county’s Sea Turtle Protection Program. County residents can help protect sea turtle habitat by eliminating artificial light on beachfront property and preventing disturbance of sea turtle nests.

When sea turtle hatchlings emerge from the nest, they instinctively crawl toward the brightest horizon; the natural glow of the gulf waters. Any artificial light, including flashlights, car headlights, flash photography and interior and exterior household lights can lead hatchlings away from the water, decreasing their chances of survival.

To help protect sea turtles, beach residents should remove outdoor lighting and shield interior lights with drapes. Visitors are asked to avoid using flashlights and lanterns.

Responsible pet owners know that dogs should be kept on a leash and not left unattended on a sea turtle nesting beach. Beach furniture should also be removed at night to avoid disturbing sea turtle nesting habits.

Sea turtle nests are federally protected. If you see someone tampering with a nest or harassing a sea turtle, contact the nearest law enforcement agency.  For free sea turtle educational materials and awareness tags, call 941-861-6210.
